More than 1,000 Pakistani psychiatrists are practicing in the United States, as against only 600 to 700 psychiatrists working across the country, It was revealed during a meeting of President Pakistani Psychiatry Association of North America (PAPANA) Dr Mohammad Zeeshan with President Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Prof Dr Rizwan Taj on Monday.
It was decided that PAPANA would spearhead a Mental Health Awareness Campaign in Pakistan in collaboration with the PMDC.
According to a statement, the strategic alliance aims to address the growing need for increased awareness, understanding and destigmatisation of mental health issues within the country.
The PMDC recognises the critical importance of mental health in the overall well-being of individuals and communities.
The two sides also discussed strengthening the capacitybuilding process of psychia-trists working in Pakistan.
Dr Zeeshan said that there was a huge need for mental health awareness, relevant courses, and pieces of training to cope with rapidly growing depression, anxiety, and other mental illnesses, etc.
He also added that since there was not much literature available on psychiatry in Pakistan, he and Professor of Harvard University Dr Harrison wrote two books namely Psychiatry for medical and nursing students.
Dr Mohammad Zeeshan said: `our society aims to furthercollaborate with PMDC and to improve the training, certification courses, and short courses regarding psychiatry. Without collaboration, we cannot achieve the objective`.
President PMDC Dr Rizwan Taj stated that `The collaboration between PMDC and the PAPANA is a significant step towards addressing the pressing mental health needs in Pakistan. By combining our resources and expertise, we aim to create a positive impact on the lives of individuals and families affected by mental health issues.
